Suffering from a fever?

What is fever? It’s a body temperature higher than 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. In reality, it is no fever unless it is higher than 100.4. Moreover, fever is not a disease or an illness.

How do you catch a fever?

Fever is your body’s response to an infection. By raising the body temperature, your body tries to make it difficult for the germs to survive. So do not panic immediately. Some types of fever can be treated at home but you have to be very careful that your fever doesn’t persist for long. Below are some things you must do when you feel a fever…

Record the temperature

A lot of people do not record their temperature when they feel feverish. This is a big mistake. You should record your temperature using a thermometer. Most often viral infections are the cause of fever but sometimes it can be a bacterial infection or something worse. Be assured, your doctor will ask for your fever history.

Stay hydrated

When you have a fever, have lots of fluids. From the humble water to nimbu pani, nariyal pani and soups, you can have a variety of liquids. Fever dehydrates your body and it becomes important to replace the fluids you are losing.

Eat only if you want to

While your family will insist you to eat proper meals, it is absolutely normal if you don’t feel like eating. Try having a steamy bowl of soup instead of a whole meal to provide your body the much needed energy.

Stay cool

It was earlier believed that when one has fever, they should cover themselves with layers and layers of clothes and blankets to sweat out the fever. But it doesn’t really function like that. Instead keep yourself cool as it will help you beat any discomfort you are experiencing.

Get ample rest

Sleep activates your immune system and it is advised to get enough rest when you are suffering from fever. It will help your body recover faster.

Have a medicine to reduce fever

There are some fever reducing medicines that help bring down your body temperature. Consult a doctor and administer the right dosage.
