People Who Praised Me For ‘Udaan’ Never Offered Me Films: Rajat Barmecha On Film Industry’s Hypocrisy

“The reason you didn’t see a lot of me is, firstly I didn’t get offered 50 films. It’s not that after Udaan every director wanted to work with me. They did praise me and said I am a great actor and I have a great future, but for some reason, they didn’t offer me films.”, says Rajat Barmecha with equal parts of dissatisfaction and hope.

It’s been ten years since the release of Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan and Rajat, who played Rohan Singh is still known as the ‘Udaan-Guy’.

The film is still touted as a cinematic gem but why didn’t we see more of him?

In a candid and honest chat with us, he says, “I was offered films but the characters had hardly or no importance at all in the film. They said “Arre…but woh poori picture mein hai aapka character” and I said “Mujhe bas hona nahi hai picture mein.” You also didn’t see a lot of me because I didn’t want to compromise on my craft. If I didn’t like a project I simply said nowww.informationcenter.co.in . I didn’t pick up a project just because they were paying me a bomb. Money for me is important but it will always be second important. The content will always be my top priority. In all of this, I made mistakes also. Won’t say I didn’t. I must have. But all that taught me well. Even today I feel extremely proud and totally responsible for all of my choices. They made me the person I am today.”

After Udaan, Rajat appeared in a cameo in Bejoy Nambiar’s Shaitaan and a few web-shows. He recently made headlines for his empathetic, honest, and strong-worded messages, in which he called out film fraternity’s hypocrisy.

After Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise, Rajat did what many couldn’t. He sent out important messages using his Instagram videos that eventually, went viral. He gave words to everyone’s collective feelings.
