Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge ‘Bogibeel Bridge’ on Tuesday. The 4.94 Kilometre long bridge connects Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge, ‘Bogibeel Bridge’ was inaugurated on Tuesday by PM Modi. The 4.94 Kilometre long bridge was sanctioned in 1997-98 and it took nearly 20 years for the bridge to finally be functional. The bridge connects Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and is built at an estimated cost of Rs 5,960 crore.

It may be noted that prior to this bridge, the Vembanad Bridge in Kerala was the longest in the country, at a length of 4.62 kilometres. The 4.95 km bridge spans from Dibrugarh, Assam to Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar. This bridge has reduced the travel significantly. While road travel distance between the two cities has been reduced by about 150 Km, rail travel distance will be reduced by 705 Km.

About 3 million bags of cement, 19,250 tonnes of reinforcement steel and around 2,800 tonnes of structural steel have been used to construct the structure. The lower deck of the railway track has double line broad gauge tracks, while the upper deck of the bridge is a three-lane road.

Worth mentioning here is that this is the fourth bridge to be built on the Brahmputra river. The other three bridges are Naranarayan Setu, Kolia Bhomora Setu and Bhupen Hazarika Setu. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Bridge is still the longest bridge in India at a length of 9.15 Km.
