To file income tax return online in India, you need to follow these steps:
1. Visit the e – filing website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal and register or login to your account.
2. Click on ‘Taxpayer’ and then enter the details of your PAN and click on ‘validate’.
3. Provide details such as your name, address, gender, residential status, date of birth, etc.
4. Provide your email ID and registered mobile number.
5. Choose the right income tax form based on your sources of income and eligibility criteria.
You can either file ITR 1 and ITR 4 online or download the offline utility software for other forms.
6. Fill in your details in the online form or the downloaded file.
7. You can also import pre-filled XML data from ‘My Account > Download Pre-Filled XML’
Option.
1. Validate all the tabs of the ITR form and calculate the tax. You can also check your TDS certificates and Form 26AS for tax deducted and paid during the financial year.
2. Generate and save the XML file if you are using offline utility software. If you are filing online, you can skip this step.
3. Upload the XML file on the e-filing portal by clicking on ‘e-File’ menu and ‘Income Tax Return’ link. If you are filing online, you can submit the form directly.
Choose any one of the following options to verify your income tax return:
1. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC),
2. Aadhaar OTP,
3. EVC using Pre validated Bank Account Details,
4. EVC using Pre validated Demat Account Details,
5. Already generated EVC through My Account
6. Generate EVC Option or Bank ATM,
7. I would like to e -Verify later. Please remind me,
8. I don’t want to e- verify this Income Tax Return and would like to send signed ITR-V through normal or speed post to “Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru – 560500
